Food for all- Langar Sewa

" Langar( Punjabi word) ( kitchen) is the term used in Sikhism for the community kitchen in a gurudwara where a free meal is served to all the visitors, without distinction of religion, caste, gender, economic status or ethnicity. The meal is always vegetarian".

Langar expresses the ethics of sharing, caring and noble union of humanity eliminating hunger by feeding all.

Sewa is the act of serving. So to serve and feed all, women, children and Volunteers called Sewadars, do all the preparation, the cooking, serving and the cleaning.

Sometime in the year 1481, the first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, first started the principle of Langar Sewa, with the core belief to bring people together and break the caste system. once prevalent in India during the 13th and 14th centuries. With the Langar Sewa, the kitchen, and the meal is open to all, eliminating any discrimination of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender or social status.

Langar and The Equality

Sikhism teaches Equality. Langar Sewa welcomes all and Langar is served to all people, irrespective of their religion, colour or gender. Everyone eats together, hence everyone is equal.

Langar Sewa – An Initiative by Sewa Roshni

Sewa Roshni has taken the initiative of “Langar Sewa “ beyond by not just feeding the poor, rather it has encouraged the underprivileged people to join in to serve and to be served.

Sewa Roshni has made a significant and valuable contribution to this service both in Delhi and Kashipur. We, as a collective, are helping the needy to illuminate the Light of courage in their lives.
